Surgery is the primary treatment for brain tumours that can be removed without causing severe damage. Many benign (non-cancerous) tumours are only surgically treated. However, most malignant (cancerous) tumours require additional treatment, such as radiation therapy and/or chemotherapy. Surgical treatment for brain tumours may include one or more of the following objectives: Obtain tissue for examination under a microscope to confirm the diagnosis. Remove the entire tumour, or as much as possible of it. Reduce symptoms and improve quality of life by reducing intracranial pressure caused by cancer. Allow for internal chemotherapy or radiation implantation. Allow for intra-operative treatments such as hyper therapy or laser surgery.
