LAMINECTOMY

The most common type of spinal surgery is a laminectomy. The spinal surgeon removes a small portion of the bone (called lamina) from the lower spine during the procedure. The procedure is usually performed on the lower back (lumbar laminectomy), but may be used on the neck (cervical laminectomy) or in the middle of the back (thoracic laminectomy). The lamina (also known as "bony arches") are pieces of bone that protrude from the back of the spine. Their removal during surgery reduces the pressure on the compressed nerves or spine, which may improve quality of life and function. The natural aging process of the spinal cord begins within 30 years and, in many cases, causes pain or emotional symptoms. When these symptoms interfere with functioning and quality of life, surgery is often the best option. A laminectomy is sometimes performed as part of major surgery for other reasons.
