The two types of tumours that can develop in the brain are benign (non-cancerous) and malignant (cancerous). Contrary to malignant ones, benign ones can be surgically removed and do not spread to other parts. However, both tumours harm the surrounding cells by inflaming and pressurising the tissue inside the skull as well as beneath it. The most frequent form of treatment for most brain tumours is brain surgery. The procedure of opening the skull is known as a craniotomy. It is carried out while completely unconscious. The scalp is shaved prior to surgery. A piece of bone from the skull is then removed by the surgeon using a specialised saw after making an incision in the scalp. The surgeon closes the opening in the skull with that piece of bone, a piece of metal, or a piece of fabric after partially or completely removing the tumour. The scalp incision is then stitched up by the surgeon. Despite the fact that surgery is the main form of treatment, the course of action is typically determined by the type of tumour, where it is located, its size and grade, as well as the patient's age and overall health.
