A lumbar puncture, also known as a spinal tap, is a test used to identify specific medical conditions. It takes place in the lumbar region of your lower back. A lumbar puncture is a procedure where a needle is inserted between two lumbar vertebrae to obtain a sample of cerebrospinal fluid. Your brain and spinal cord are encased in this fluid to keep them safe from harm. A lumbar puncture can be used to identify serious infections like meningitis, as well as multiple sclerosis and Guillain-Barre syndrome, other conditions of the central nervous system, bleeding, and cancers of the brain or spinal cord. The cerebrospinal fluid may occasionally be injected with chemotherapy or anaesthetic drugs using a lumbar puncture. A lumbar puncture (also known as a spinal tap) may be performed to perform the following tasks: collect cerebrospinal fluid to test for infections, inflammation, or other diseases; measure the pressure of the fluid; administer spinal anaesthetics, chemotherapy medications, or other medications; or inject dye (myelography) or radioactive substances (cisternography) into the fluid to create diagnostic images of the fluid's flow.
